Hi Chaps,
The plan worked yesterday at Darley Moor for the British Cycling CAT3/4 race!38 miles in total, 50 turned out for the event. Both myself and Paul Darby entered and the gaffer had done his homework which was great. A strong crosswind went across the start, finish line making life a little difficult to say the least. Corners had some lovely raised concrete slabs to stay clear of!
We started well and Paul advise was to try and stay in the front half, with that in mind we went to work. Staying towards the front it was a fast race but with a fair amount of room on the course. Paul tried 3 breaks in the race and I bridged to him on the 2nd (no bunch in tow Paul, I'm learning) but we were soon chased down. Final lap really and we were both positioned well, me 3rd and Paul just behind. A rider broke off the front and I followed his wheel but again we were chased down. I thought I was done for then having burnt out and got a little swamped in the bunch but sat in 20th ish and recovered for a few mins before the final corner. Stayed on the left windward side approaching the final left bend and the sprint was on around the corner. Paul now was blocked in on he right side of he track and then the rider I front sat up, end of race for him. All the riders seemed to get of of the seats early for the sprint but I stayed super low on the drops and started charging up the middle. Then up out of he seat for the last 200 metres still picking up wheels on he way through, had a contest with a ride coming up on he right but held out for 4th place.
Really enjoyed the race and it was nice to have a bit of room for a change compared to SSC. Thanks for the advice Paul, it really helped. A few points and a couple of quid in prize money, I had a great day. We are back to Darley on Sunday 8th Sept so hopefully both of us can improve more on a new track for us both Big up for the Wyre Forest!!!
