The Duo Normand is a 54.3km (34 miles) time trial for teams of two held on the roads around the town of Marigny in Normandy. Riders can race as either a two up or a tandem team.
This year's Duo Normand attracted an entry of over 400 teams from all over the world with the first riders off at 8:00am and the last at 16:42pm. Wyre Forest CRC's Chris Morris and Phil Hunt started in the tandem race at 10:45am and with weather conditions considerably better than last year their confidence was high.
The first part of the course was very fast and Chris and Phil went through the first 10 miles well under 20 minutes. Through the next section which is exposed and prone to wind and the following hilly section they maintained their early effort and returned to the town of Marigny in 57 minutes 30 seconds which was well inside the one hour schedule they had set themselves.
On the final out and back leg, although still riding strongly, the duo were held up several times when they caught slower riders and their team cars which were difficult to pass on the narrow roads used on this part of the course. Despite this minor hindrance Chris and Phil completed the undulating course in 1:15:08 to take first place in the tandem category finishing over three minutes ahead of the Guernsey Velo Club pairing of Graeme Le Meatre and Andy Le Page who had won this race for the last two years. This was a fitting end to their season which has seen them unbeaten in all their tandem races.
