For anyone interested in riding a 'proper' cyclo-sportive if you follow the link you can pull up a list of all the Grand Trophee events in France for this year, together with info and entry details. Most popular for UK riders is the end of season Ronde Picarde which I have ridden 3 times (had a Bronze, a Silver, and a Gold). For a real tough one there is the Marmotte, something I've yet to try Grand trophee Cycling event 2014 www.sportcommunication.com If Italy is more appealing you have a good choice there too; the Nove Colli Gran Fondo can be entered direct or via a discounted block entrée that Hotel Dory and other hotels in the Riccione offer, together with guided rides if you stay on a while. I should have ridden in 2013 but had to scratch due to my poor health - now sorted! Then there is the Felice Gimondi Gran Fondo based at Bergamo, Joe Rowe has recommended this so it's on my radar for another year. Some events, like the Quebrantehousese ? in Spain are so popular you need to enter way in advance and hope to get a place in the draw - bit like the Dragon Ride is becoming in Wales. If you must ride a home sportive then the cyclosport.com website gives a full listing for the UK and includes reliability trials, challenge rides, and charity events. All the best.

I'm told the Picarde is very flat which suits me just fine!
Is anyone intending to enter it?

Best way to do the Picardy is to enter on line, preferably as a group, then book a cottage near Abbeville through Cottages 4 you. Travel over at least 1 day before as the registration etc is in Abbeville then, go by car with bikes, cheapest is Dover Calais ferry, quickest is by Eurotunnel. Abbeville is about an hours drive from Calais. If you do a long wk/end, say 3 or 4 days, you can chill out and ride locally -it's nice down to the coast for lunch for example. If you want to have everything organised for you then book with Stuart at stuarthallcycling . Most events now require you to ride with a helmet, and you'll need either a racing licence (BC or LVRC), or medical certificate to enter. The latter can be downloaded from Cyclosport.org website. Club members who have ridden before inc myself, John Smith, Ken Bradbury, Paul Crook, and Joe Rowe. Joe is at the next social in Feb. Now's the time to get a group together. The Picardy is said to be flat but that's not entirely accurate, there are quite a few small climbs early on; but it is the fastest sportive and great fun, specially when the groups have settled in after 20k or so. Enjoy
