A BC initiative to encourage riders to focus on road racing skills, some interesting stuff whether you are a new rider or a rider with a few races under your belt. British Cycling RaceSmart - click hereThey make a good point about remembering the guy on your shoulder when moving around the bunch. A few key points I have lived by in 25 years of racing are: - Never make sudden moves, particularly sideways.
- Don't end up in the gutter, you have nowhere to go.
- Look a long way ahead, don't stare at the wheel in front. Look for the ripple effect coming down the bunch.
- Don't overlap your front wheel with the rear wheel of the rider in front (This is the biggest cause of crashes)
- Be smooth and predictable.
- Hold your line. (This means don't cut to the apex's of corners, if you are about 6 feet from the kerb as you enter the corner, hold a line about 6 feet away as you take the corner)
- Brake before a corner, only ask your tyres to do one thing at a time, either brake or turn, especially when wet.
- Don't react suddenly if you touch bars or shoulders with another rider. Stay relaxed, its usually the reaction that brings a rider down, not the touch of bars.
