As many of you know I have been a regular cycling visitor to the island over the past 10 years, doing a couple of weeks each spring and also autumn. Myself, Mary and Mike Haddon tried an apartment in Port Pollensa this year for 12 days in April and it worked out well. We got some good rides in, Mary rode up Selva gorge and the Coll de sa Batalla, a beautiful 8km climb with a cafe/lunch stop at the top. Mike and myself also entered and rode Tolo's 9th annual TT; it was a very windy morning but we equiped ourselves well in the WFCRC colours and later on the 3 of us enjoyed a great feast in Tolo's restaurant inc all drinks and entertainment inc in our entry fee (25 euro's). When our holiday ended the 2 M's flew home and I went down the coast to join Sun Velo again for 3 weeks as a group ride leader - having already done most of March with them!
Unlike the earlier stint which had unseasonable cold north winds and cloud most of March, this time it was dry, hot and sunny. On 14th May we did 110km inc a decent climb and the island temp record for the month was broken when it topped 41 deg C; it was like riding in an oven with the fan on as it was also pretty windy that day
Of the 49 days I rode (2 days off) I covered 2,511 mls, (4,018 km) which has trimmed my waist a tad, and left me slightly fatigued, but it was a great time. They have asked me to go back in the autumn so I will be there from 12th September until early Oct; then I will move up to Port Pollensa for a fortnights holiday proper with Mary and others. If anyone fancies coming out then October is the best time, the weather is usually very good without being too hot, prices are better, and plenty of fellow UK riders now go that month. Normally riders book with stuathallcycling and stay at Pollensa Park hotel in Port Pollensa but Jet2 have taken over that venue this October so he is moving down to Alcudia, same town as Kelly's Sport Active, and about 4km away from Sun Velo. All 3 tour operators also do hire bikes if needed, run various packages, and prices depend on hotel quality etc; or you can just do your own thing at Port Pollensa either in an hotel or an apartment. October in the sun is a nice way to round off the year bike wise and helps shorten our winter time, I recomend it.
