I have just purchased a new road bike for safer riding during winter which has disc brakes and I wanted to share my first experience using them.
When ordering the bike I was concerned that the bike was going to be heavier than my Felt and I would have to work extra hard to keep up with the pace however, thanks to Justin and Echelon Cycles the bike isn't much heavier, fits perfectly and the braking is massively different.
Being a small person, gripping the brakes and braking sharply isn't always easy however disc brakes react and brake so much easier and quicker.
I know UCI and British Cycling have their opinions and rules regarding disc brakes but ladies you really should consider them when you are buying a bike because I can't believe the difference they make. They have increased my confidence and I think this bike wont be kept just for winter riding.

Welcome to the disc brake fan club Lucy. Anyone riding at 30 plus mph down a 10% gradient in torrential rain with a tight bend or road junction fast approaching would wish for discs as their cantilevers failed to clear the water fast enough. Don't keep your bike for Winter use only, we have bad weather throughout the year in this country. If or when I get around to building/buying my next bike it will have discs and tubeless tyres: I am still looking for a bike with specs which tick all the boxes.
