I thought I’d stick this info on the website etc in case any WFCRC members would like to try them. I will be at some of them so we can always hook up for rides etc.
First up will be the Ronde Picardy this September. An easy hop across the channel and about an hours drive from Calais this is one of the most popular with Brits. Based at Abbeville there are 2 distances, the Masters over km, and the Senior over km. The Ronde Picardy is famous for being the fastest of all the sportives, it’s mostly flattish with rolling hills in the 1st and 4th quarters. A number of WFCRC members have ridden in recent years, I have done the Masters twice and the Senior once, booking a French gite or cottage for 3 or 4 days.
Secondly several of us will be in Puerto Pollensa, Mallorca this September and October. Some have booked their accommodation direct with hotels or travel companies like Jet2, either taking their own bikes, or pre booking hire bikes. There are a number of group rides from the town, inc those from Pollensa Park hotel or opposite at Pro Cycle. My group of 8 will be staying just round the corner from the above, between the 18th Sept and 7th Oct; after which I hope to transfer down the coast to Sun Velo as one of the ride leaders. You can also book with SV direct inc carbon bike hire, check out their website for more info.
Next year, 2018, I expect to be back on the island March/April time, hopefully ride leading with Sun Velo again who have just announced the following sportive offer.
For those who haven’t ridden any of the 3 sportives you need to come in good condition, all of them take in the Tramuntana mountains so it is a hard days riding. I did it a few years back and have learnt my lesson!

Some club members, Mike Haddon, Paul Crook, Joe Rowe, have also done the northern classics 2 big sportives, the Ronde van Vlaanderen in Belgium, and Paris-Roubaix. These fall early spring so the weather can still be wintry but the main challenge are the cobbles in both, plus the many steep climbs (Murs) in the Ronde. A good base for the Ronde is Oudenarde, but you need to book accommodation early.
In May I have it in mind to return to Italy and the Dory bike hotel at Riccione. They do a selection of daily rides, plus advance entry into the countries oldest sportive the Nove Coli (9 hills) which has a choice of 2 distances. I had to DNS last time due to a heart problem, now sorted, so the event is back on my radar. It also tends to fall at the same time as the Giro d Italia passes through the region so there’s a possibility of seeing the local stage too. Again the hotel has bike hire if needed, do airport transfers, and social activities for non cycling partners. As soon as the 2018 Giro course is shown I will decide on my dates.
