2014 will be the 5th year of the Mallorca 312 which is a complete lap of the island, hence 312km, but in 2014 you can decide en route whether you do the full beastie, or take the 167km option. There will be well over 1000 riders, the initial roll out along the coast is neutralised before passing Pollensa, then you are into the Tramantura mountains with a long easy gradient climb up to Luc, then it's up and down a bit before the ascent of Puig Major, the islands highest point. There is a spectacular descent all the way down to Soller then it's again lumpy following the coast south west before turning towards Palma. Around that point is where you have to decide on doing the 167 or the 312. I've included some more details below so if anyone is thinking of Mallorca early next year then why not include this sportive. I will be out for 1 week, I've booked already as prices may go up after 1st December, flight details are shown. If you take your own bike you really need a box, options are to buy, borrow, or hire. Accomodation: via stuarthallcycling: Half board Pollensa Park inc transfers the 8 days will be £375 based on 2 sharing, or single supplement of £10 night. Price is currently £50 off the normal rate.
The flights are the lowest found, early one out at 06.10 but later coming back at 19.15. Gives a full week of 8 days.
Best option, for me, I think would be to do the 167km route which takes in the mountains and is most picturesque/challenging and by riding to the start 12km from our hotel the days total would be some 191km; plenty imo, although some of you may want to do the whole island circuit of 312km which has a 14 hour cut off time. You can get info by going to the mallorca 312 website, where you can also register on line.
The rest of the time in Mallorca can be spent enjoying various rides, great café stops, using the hotel spa/gym/pools, having a drink or 2 after the evening meal down town at Tolo’s restaurant, or elsewhere. You should do a night out at Simbads too, Maria will welcome you and there is a great menu to choose from, inc the suckling pig!
I’ve just booked my flights, accommodation with Stuart, and registered for the sportive. Hope we can get a group of us out the same time hence this info. If you’ve not been to the island before as a cyclist you’ve missed out big time, but you need to carry with you 2 spare tubes, emergency contact and insurance details, EU health card, helmet, a cape for the mountains, and some money to buy me cake is an absolute must.
Wives, girlfriends, etc can come too. If non cycling they usually chill out by the pool or wander down town together for a coffee, maybe do the lovely pine walk, go to the markets, catch a bus to Pollensa old town or Alcudia. There is also golf a few km away for those that want to play a round or 2. Daytime rides usually leave at 10.00am and return mid afternoon. Cycle hire is available in town, 10mins walk, and there are 2 decent bike shops there; plus of course you can arrange car hire, if you take your licence and passport.
Mallorca 312/167 sportive and short holiday.
