Thought I’d nominate myself to write up an account of this years weekend away so here goes.
Eight of us left SSC at 9.30 on a cool Saturday morning. Everything went well for the first 3 miles until Andy Convery’s chain decided to snap on the climb up from the quarry road just past Dunley. Andy O stepped in with a timely quick link and we were swiftly on our way. We soon reached our elevenese stop at Burford Nurseries Cafe Tenbury
Andy C’s route then took us up the ‘wonderful’ 4 mile climb to Cleehill village via the B4214 where my lack of fitness made itself woefully clear (sorry guys). A swift descent of Angel Bank led to the B4364 and another 4 mile climb where my lack of fitness made....blah blah. As luck would have it Andy C’s freehub imploded 3 miles short of Bridgnorth giving me a brief respite until Gary got me to help push him the rest of the way! lol.
Lunch break at Costa Bridgnorth saw Derek turn up to rescue Andy C and we now became the magnificent 7 for the final short hop to Ironbridge and the YHA at Coalport.
That evening saw a short 2 mile walk to the pub for a good meal and a few drinks with everyone being sensible this time!
Any thoughts of a good nights sleep were soon dashed by the entire Wrekin Cub scout movement carrying out parachute landing practice off the top floor bunkbeds - deep joy!
Chris Morris made our number back to 8 for the ride home but only for about 400 yards. Unbeknown to the group Dave M and Andy O had gone back for Dave’s bottle and thus took a different turn out of the gorge. By the time we realised what had happened it was too late so we pressed on as 6. Eventually the remnants of our group reunited with Dave and Andy at Wolverley for a final cuppa before heading our separate ways home. A great time had by all.
